Electrification of the Athens – Thessaloniki line

Description

The project concerns the installation of an electrification system with remote control on the Acharnes – Tithorea and Domokos – Thessaloniki sections and was carried out under multiple contracts implemented in stages. The electrification of the Domokos – Thessaloniki section was placed in operation and commercial service in stages in September 2007 and September 2008. Since then a double electrified line has been in operation. On the Acharnes – Tithorea section, owing to extensive thefts of and damage to the electrification system, restoration works were carried out and completed in April 2017. The Acharnes – Oinoi section has already been in operation since May 2015. In addition, the works for the installation of electrification on the section from the exit of Athens Railway Station to Treis Gefyres were completed in April 2017 and the section was placed in operation in August 2017. The Treis Gefyres – Acharnes (SKA) section had been handed over to OSE for use in December 2015 and, following the operation of the electrified Athens Railway Station (July 2017), it is in operation. Interoperability is ensured through a uniform track gauge with the northern network.
