Depending on their facilities and equipment, freight centres support loading and unloading, container transshipment, temporary storage and the preparation of freight for the next stage of its journey. Bringing these activities together in dedicated facilities facilitates coordination between carriers, businesses and logistics service providers.

The use of freight centres can reduce unnecessary movements, improve the utilisation of available transport capacity and facilitate shipment planning. At the same time, moving more freight by rail helps reduce road congestion and the environmental impact of transport.
