Hellenic Railways (OSE): 1,231 old wagons removed from the network, freeing up critical space and enhancing the safety of facilities

More than 25,000 tonnes of scrap are being sold off and removed from railway sites in Western Macedonia, Central Macedonia, Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, and Fthiotida.

Hellenic Railways (OSE) is proceeding with one of the largest operations to remove old and unusable railway rolling stock from the network, with the launch of an open auction tender for the sale and removal of 1,231 units of old rolling stock, with a total estimated weight of 25,442,300 kilograms, that is, more than 25,000 tonnes of scrap.

The procedure concerns the removal of old and unusable rolling stock from railway sites and facilities in four geographical areas of the country: Western Macedonia, Central Macedonia, Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, and the Regional Unit of Fthiotida.

The material to be sold off comprises 696 units of rolling stock belonging to the Greek State and managed by Hellenic Railways (OSE), and 535 units owned by the company. The estimated revenue for the organisation amounts to at least EUR 5,724,517.50 plus VAT, while the award will be made on the criterion of the highest price offered.

On completion of the procedure, Hellenic Railways (OSE) aims to achieve a substantial decongestion of critical railway sites, the removal of material that has remained out of use for many years, and an improvement in the safety, appearance and functionality of the network's facilities.

The initiative forms part of the overall plan for the modernisation of the Greek railway being implemented by Hellenic Railways (OSE), in cooperation with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, with the aim of upgrading infrastructure, making better use of the available space and enhancing safety across the network.

The contractor emerging from the tender procedure will undertake, at its own expense, the removal of the rolling stock within 14 months of the signature of the contract, in accordance with the technical, operational and environmental terms laid down in the tender documents. Tenders must be received by 27 May 2026 at 11:00 a.m.

The Chief Executive Officer of Hellenic Railways (OSE), Mr Christos Paliós, stated:

"By removing 1,231 old wagons from the railway network, we are taking a further substantial step towards cleaning up and upgrading our facilities. This is material that has remained out of use for years at railway sites, weighing on the appearance, the functionality and, in some cases, the safety of the facilities and of the wider areas where it is stored.

Particularly in the Thessaloniki area, where a significant part of the old rolling stock is concentrated, this intervention responds to a real and long-standing need to decongest the city's railway sites and to improve the appearance, functionality and safety of the facilities."
