First upgraded section of the Athens–Thessaloniki line returns to service after storms Daniel and Elias – Traffic suspension between Lianokladi and Larissa for the completion of the works

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, in cooperation with Hellenic Railways, is completing a significant milestone in the programme to repair the damage caused to the railway network in Thessaly by storms Daniel and Elias.

With the completion of the works in the area of Domokos, the first section of the Athens–Thessaloniki railway line to have been permanently restored is being returned to service.

The new infrastructure includes two new railway bridges, 253 and 156 metres in length, the raising of the track, as well as extensive reinforcement and hydraulic protection works. These interventions significantly strengthen the resilience of the line against flooding and improve the long-term reliability of the country's principal railway axis.

In order to complete the final works and connect the new infrastructure to the existing network, traffic between Lianokladi and Larissa will have to be suspended from 22 to 25 June 2026.

Hellenic Railways is working with Hellenic Train on passenger information and services, and with freight railway undertakings on the planning of freight flows during the period of the suspension.
