Resumption of operation of the Diakofto–Kalavryta rack railway

As part of the actions towards the resumption of operation of the rack railway, subject to confirmation by the local government authorities that the risk of landslides on the line has been reduced, Hellenic Railways is completing the maintenance and cleaning works on the rails along the entire Diakofto–Kalavryta line.

Clearance and cleaning works on the railway line have already been completed on the section from the 15th to the 22nd kilometre, with the removal of vegetation and materials affecting the clearance zone of the line.

A special works train with track section personnel was scheduled to run on Friday 5 June, in order to complete the works on the remaining section of the line, ahead of the possible resumption of operation of the rack railway during the summer period, when severe weather events do not occur.

It is recalled that Hellenic Railways has already requested from the competent technical services of the Municipality of Kalavryta official information on the current situation in the area of the Vouraikos, as well as data on whether or not high-intensity landslide phenomena occur during the summer period, although no relevant confirmation has been provided to date.

The relevant information will be assessed together with the other technical and operational data being examined by the Infrastructure Manager.

Hellenic Railways is continuing all the necessary actions to prepare the line and to assess the conditions for the resumption of its operation, with the safety of passengers and workers as the absolute priority.
