Network Restoration Works in Thessaly

The railway restoration works in Thessaly are advancing at an intensive pace and on schedule – Temporary changes to services, greater capacity in the future.

OSE – Hellenic Railways S.A., the country's Railway Infrastructure Manager, announces that the works to upgrade the railway infrastructure in Thessaly, which began in April 2025 following the damage caused by storm Daniel, are proceeding on schedule and have now entered their most critical phase. Completion is expected in the summer of 2026.

This is a strategic investment that shields the railway network against extreme weather events and strengthens its resilience to the climate crisis. The works include reinforced structures, modern Signalling, ETCS L1, Traffic Control and Electrification systems, as well as critical interventions that increase capacity on the main Athens–Thessaloniki axis.

The project, with a total budget of EUR 450 million, is financed from national and European funds and covers the restoration of the double track between Domokos and Krannonas and of the Palaiofarsalos–Kalambaka and Larissa–Volos sections. Carrying out the works requires the temporary suspension of traffic on sections of the line during the day, which entails a reduction in services. OSE – Hellenic Railways S.A. is working closely with Hellenic Train to serve the travelling public, and with rail freight operators, in order to achieve the best possible planning and to minimise the impact.
