Part A of the "Digital Transformation of Hellenic Railways" Completed – New digital services and infrastructure at 30 stations

Hellenic Railways has completed Part A of the "Digital Transformation of Hellenic Railways" project, a major investment for the modernisation of the digital infrastructure and services of the Greek railway network. The completion and acceptance of the physical scope of works were approved by the Board of Directors at its meeting on Thursday 27 August 2026.

Part A of the project is financed by the Recovery and Resilience Facility, under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan "Greece 2.0", with funding from the European Union – NextGenerationEU.

The project creates the new digital foundation for a modern, interconnected and more passenger-friendly railway. Through the use of new technologies, information and services for the travelling public are being upgraded, station infrastructure is being modernised, and the interoperability, operation and management of the network are being strengthened.

Part A comprises the development of the project's central digital applications and the installation of new infrastructure at 30 railway stations. Part B, with which implementation of the project continues, comprises the planned interconnections with the systems of third-party bodies, as well as the completion of the on-board telematics infrastructure.

Once both parts are complete, the individual applications and infrastructure will operate as a single, interoperable digital ecosystem, creating the technological conditions for easier and more integrated travel.

New digital applications for the Greek railway

Under Part A, a set of central applications was implemented to support the new digital infrastructure and services at the stations. Specifically, these include:

— A new Ticket Management System, which creates the central digital infrastructure for modern ticket issuing, validation and inspection procedures.

— A new Telematics and Passenger Information System, for the central management of timetable information and the timely updating of the travelling public.

— A new Digital Passenger Service System, for the electronic handling of requests and complaints, accompanied by applications for mobile devices.

— Central management and supervision systems, for the unified monitoring and support of the new digital infrastructure and services.

New digital infrastructure at 30 railway stations

A central part of the investment is the development of new digital infrastructure at 30 railway stations, which serve more than 60% of the network's total passenger traffic.

The new infrastructure includes:

— automatic ticket vending machines,

— ticket issuing, validation and inspection equipment,

— digital passenger information displays,

— Wi-Fi infrastructure providing access to the internet,

— video surveillance systems.

The project continues – The next step

Implementation of the "Digital Transformation of Hellenic Railways" continues with Part B of the project. This provides for the required interconnections and interoperability with the systems of third-party bodies, as well as the completion of the on-board telematics infrastructure.

Upon its full completion, the project will have shaped the digital infrastructure required for the next day of the Greek railway: upgraded stations, better information and modern services for the travelling public.
