Network Development
The development of the rail network is a strategic investment in the country’s connectivity, economic competitiveness and sustainable mobility. At Hellenic Railways, we plan the upgrading and expansion of rail infrastructure with the aim of delivering a safe, reliable and efficient railway that meets the needs of passengers and businesses while strengthening Greece’s connection to the European rail network. Our strategy combines the completion of critical links, technological modernisation and the long-term maintenance of infrastructure. We prioritise investments based on safety needs, the operational significance of each route and the expected transport benefits, ensuring that every intervention contributes to improving the overall performance of the network.
Infrastructure Upgrading & Resilience
Upgrading the existing network is fundamental to the development of rail transport. We focus on improvements to railway lines, stations and critical technical infrastructure, with the aim of enhancing safety, addressing capacity constraints and reducing failures and service disruptions.
We integrate project planning with operational and maintenance requirements throughout the entire lifecycle of the infrastructure. The gradual transition towards preventive maintenance, systematic monitoring of network condition and the incorporation of climate adaptation measures support a more resilient infrastructure, with greater availability and long-term value for the transport system.
Network Expansion & Strategic Connectivity
We are working towards an integrated network that connects cities and regions more effectively with ports, freight and logistics hubs, centres of economic activity and international transport corridors. Completing critical sections of the network and developing new connections create the conditions for enhancing passenger mobility and increasing the role of rail in the logistics chain.
Our planning takes into account transport demand, the role of each route and opportunities to integrate rail with other modes of transport. Through this approach, we direct investment towards connections that support regional development, facilitate trade and strengthen Greece’s position within the European transport system.
Technological Modernisation & Interoperability
The deployment of modern signalling, remote traffic control and train control systems, together with the expansion of railway electrification, is a key priority in the modernisation of the network. The aim is to enhance safety, improve traffic management and align the infrastructure with European interoperability requirements.
At the same time, the use of digital tools and data supports infrastructure monitoring, the early identification of issues and more effective planning of interventions. Through these investments, we are working towards a network with greater operational capacity and energy efficiency, capable of supporting the development of both domestic and cross-border rail services.
