Giorgos Ioannou

Giorgos Ioannou is Professor of Production and Service Management at the Department of Management Science and Technology (DMST) of the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB). Alongside his academic, research and teaching work at the university, he has considerable experience and a record of achievement in corporate bodies and organisations.

He holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, an M.Sc. from Imperial College, UK, and a doctorate from the University of Maryland, USA. He has also taught as a Professor in the Department of Industrial & Systems Engineering at Virginia Tech.

In academic positions of responsibility, Professor Ioannou served as Director of the English-language MBA of the Athens University of Economics and Business – MBA International (2007-2017), and led the accreditation of the programme by the international body Association of MBAs (AMBA). During his tenure the programme reached the Top 10 ranking in Europe, received the international innovation award for its social media work, and won Greek awards for digital strategy, use of online networking media and corporate social responsibility.

He is also Director of the Management Science Laboratory at AUEB and has supervised more than ten doctoral theses, whose authors have gone on to significant academic careers in Greece and abroad (University of the Aegean, Athens University of Economics and Business, Hellenic Open University, University of the Peloponnese, City University London, Cardiff University and others).

Between 2008 and 2015 he was a member of the international Academic Advisory Council of Microsoft Co., promoting work on ERP systems for small and medium-sized enterprises. He has served as a member of the Senate and of the Research Committee of AUEB. For more than ten years he has been a member of the Education, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Committee of the American-Hellenic Chamber of Commerce (AmCham).

His research focuses on the quantitative and analytical study of business systems in combination with modern information systems, and he has an extensive advisory record with private companies and public organisations. He has received the Microsoft Excellence in Education award and Teaching Excellence distinctions for the courses he has taught on the MBA programmes of the Athens University of Economics and Business.

Professor Giorgos Ioannou was a member of the National Innovation Council (2012-2014) and Chair of the Evaluation Committee for the SYZEFXIS II project, the largest public-sector network transformation project of the 2012-2017 period, carried out under Information Society S.A.
